Last Friday Diplo of Major Lazer returned with more new music. His EP titled California features the likes of D.R.A.M, Santigold, Trippie Redd, GoldLink, Desiigner and Lil Xan to name a few. This EP title complements his first album titled Florida which was released in 2004. In regards to the California EP, Diplo references the creativity that went into the tape.

“When I made the Florida album over ten years ago it was me dwelling in my own mind and creating something crazy that was about where I’m from and what I imagined.. once I got to California I had been working for years in all kinds of music but this last year I was inspired by all the young sounds and rappers that have moved to LA.. felt like this album was the soundtrack to the last year of working here.”

Having listened to the EP front to back, listeners are already familiar with the earlier single releases like “Get It Right”, “Look Back” and “Worry No More”. Although, “Get It Right” on this EP special features DC native GoldLink on the remix. Personally, two of the most standout tracks on this EP feature both Trippie Redd and Lil Xan.

Their songs are fantastic and Diplo’s production brings out both artist’s strengths on the tracks to help the songs become more memorable. Both songs have pretty mellow vibes to them. Trippie Redd’s standout crooning and Lil Xan’s lethargic sounding vocals really work on their respective songs. After one listen, I couldn’t stop running them back from the beginning. This tape comes right at the time you would expect it to. The king of summer festival tunes does it again with California. Listen to the two tracks discussed and the EP in full below.
