D’Angelo fans rejoice! The Richmond, Virginia-born neo-soul icon has released his first new music since 2014’s Black Messiah. The single, titled “Unshaken,” is being released as part of the soundtrack to the console game Red Dead Redemption 2.

“Unshaken” is a bit of a curveball stylistically. The song feels like D’Angelo’s first step into elder statesman status.  These aren’t the baby making standards of past albums — the singer trades danceable grooves for a more reflective, methodical approach. D’Angelo’s vocals sound weathered like a late-career Gil Scott-Heron record. Despite these changes, the energy and soulful ethos of D’Angelo’s earlier catalog remain. Listen below on Spotify:
