Best of the Month August - Beabadoobee

Beabadoobee – Care

If you’re feeling nostalgic for late ’90s/early ’00s female rock bands, Beabadoobee has you covered. On “Care,” the Filipino-British singer’s grassy vocals mix with crashing drums and angry guitar riffs that match nicely with the eff-off attitude of her lyrics. Had this nostalgic tune come out a decade or two earlier, she might have been the guest band at the Bronze in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, like many great 00’s bands of the time.

Gus Dapperton

Gus Dapperton – Post Humorous

Gus Dapperton’s newest single “Post Humorous” will take you for a ride. The song moves along with light bouncy instrumentals and features contemplative lyrics that go much deeper than the breezy vocals might convey. In a recent interview, Dapperton revealed the single reflects on dealing with death in early childhood and that much of the songwriting featured on his upcoming album Orca was similarly inspired by difficult life experiences. “Post Humorous” certainly has gotten our attention and we’ll be waiting to hear the rest of off his new album when it drops on September 18th.

Best of the Month August - The Knocks

The Knocks – Bodies (Ft. MUNA)

The Knocks and MUNA have teamed up to create a spot-on encapsulation of how summer in suburbia feels with “Bodies.” The track combines The Knocks’ electro beats with MUNA’s plaintive vocals, matching both up with lyrics about the loneliness of spending summers by yourself. This song perhaps feels almost too appropriate during the pandemic, as noted by MUNA on Instagram, but it’s always a nice reminder that you’re not the only one feeling this way.

Sylvan Esso

Sylvan Esso – Ferris Wheel

If you’re more in a summer-romance mood, Sylvan Esso’s Ferris Wheel” is a must-listen. The song is an exciting tease for the North Carolina duo’s upcoming album Free Love, the first album to be released since their marriage.  With a fun electric pop beat, light and fun lyrics, and a surprising pan flute solo, “Ferris Wheel” is sure to make you want to fall in love at a county fair ASAP.

Best of the Month August - Sen Morimoto

Sen Morimoto Woof

On the other side of the summertime love spectrum there’s Sen Morimoto‘s “Woof, a song about about crying so loud that your dog starts barking at you. Morimoto creates a unique hip-hop style here, marked by a low electric beat and lyrics rhapsodizing about lonely experiences like buying flowers for oneself and not having anyone to call when you’re sick. It may sound a little depressing but there is definitely a large dose of dark humor involved, which is well portrayed in the song’s music video depiction of Morimoto in a bubble-boy style enclosure.

Babeheaven

Babeheaven – Cassette Beat

Babeheaven’sCassette Beat” perfectly captures the slowness of summer with earthy tones and a cool languid rhythm. Frontwoman Nancy Anderson’s warm vocals float above a chill alt-pop beat, which she states is about creation and the subsequent destruction which inevitably occurs after creating something new. The song’s dulcet tones set a good background for introspection on the matter (or pretty much anything else you’re thinking about).

Best of the Month August - Bully

Bully – Every Tradition

If you just really feel like raging at the world right now, Bully‘s “Every Tradition” is the song for you. Whether you’re feeling frustrated about societal expectations of women or even just feeling outside pressure to conform to something that doesn’t fit your style, Bully’s high energy guitar and fight-the-system lyrics provides a fun fast-paced single that will help to release some of that pent-up energy.
