Who doesn’t love a good cover? Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, especially over the span of several years. Here’s a list of our favorite ten covers of and by Fall Classic artists this year. And DC: don’t miss out when they all play the Fall Classic this October (tickets).
Carly Rae Jepsen
Back in January, Lorde and Jack Antonoff covered Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Run Away With Me”, a song that also ironically shares a name with a Norah Jones single. We’re brought full circle via live footage. Zone in.
Maggie Rogers
Fall Classic alumni Sofi Tukker took on Maggie Rogers’ addictive “Alaska” for triple j‘s Like A Version. The duo take the original task with their own electro-tropical accents. Within the masterful tribute are sharper tones and an unshakeable love for one of their favorites.
BØRNS
For BØRNS, we’re switching gears to listen to the multi-instrumentalist’s take on a 90’s jam – none other than The Divinyls‘ erotic “I Touch Myself”, which also graced Austin Powers’ fembot takedown in 1997.
Billie Eilish
Let’s not forget about that time Billie Eilish covered Drake‘s “Hotline Bling” with a ukulele back in February at Petite Bain in Paris. It was so perfect, she took to the studio to set it in stone.
Jessie Reyez
Jessie Reyez has been collecting fans like a good day of apple picking with her earnest lyricism and soulful vocal delivery, so when we say this cover of her single “Figures” by Cierra Ramirez is gold, you’ll know what to look for.
OSHUN
This mashup by DC’s own OSHUN was recorded in 2014 and released to the open arms of neo-soul listeners across the board. Honestly, if this doesn’t touch you, we can’t help you.
Betty Who
This will be Betty Who’s second Fall Classic, and we couldn’t be more excited to have her back. Here’s her take on the Donna Lewis’ 1996 single “I Love You Always Forever”.
Ravyn Lenae
Ravyn Lenae’s sultry soul renditions have us all kinds of worked up for the festival. Back in May, she covered OutKast’s “Prototype” live at Heaven in London.
The Aces
ATG fans and die-hard listeners alike will undoubtedly know The Aces, one of our favorite bands on the rise in recent years. As they hit the road, back and forth across the states, they remind us of how truly talented they are. Let their cover of Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit” at The Truman in Kansas City be testament to that.
Alma
Last, but not least, we have Alma. The rising Finnish pop star took to an acoustic session via YouTube to share her interpretation of Mondé’s “Chasing Highs”.
