Odd Future’s controversy magnets Tyler, The Creator and Domo Genesis premiered “Sam Is Dead,” a Vietnam War-inspired video (sorry, “short film”) for the track from OF Tape Vol. 2. The video displays the best features of Tyler and the Odd Future crew: darkly surreal visuals, sluggish beats, Tyler’s strangely intriguing bass voice and an over-the-top bravado that only comes with being 20 years old. Even though the song insists he’s “still a kid in my heart, so I have a problem maturing,” this video seems to reflect a slightly more grown-up Tyler. The song steers clear of the misogynistic and homophobic rants that pepper his previous rhymes. He directed the video under his pseudonym Wolf Haley, and according to his Twitter (the source of all credible information), Tyler wants to focus on filmmaking in the future. Odd Future has always been most compelling in its video endeavors, and most of this is credited to Tyler. He garnered attention (and an MTV Video Award nomination) for 2011’s “Yonkers”, a black-and-white art-rap video. Who knows? Maybe Tyler is an Oscar-winning director in the making. The Academy Awards’ censors better be ready.
