SXSW 2011: Reptar
Reptar were by far one of my favorites at this year’s SXSW, if not for throwing down one of the more energetic sets I saw last weekend then because I inadvertently caught them three times. We here at ATG have already touted their captivating quirky pop antics, and man, do they translate well in a live setting. Especially the quirky part. Songs like “Stuck In My Id” were given new life as singer/guitarist Graham Ulicny half-growled each word into the microphone while the rest of the band went absolutely bananas on stage. And let’s not forget the mid-set battle between Tinky Winky and Mega Shark. Guess you had to be there. SXSW also allowed the Athens, GA four-piece to show off a perhaps less-poppy side of their material. Case in point is a Late of the Pier-style epic the band busted out towards the end of each of their sets. It may not have been as infectious as the aforementioned single, but I’d be damned if it didn’t get everybody jumping up and down like crazy. The intensity of their sets at SXSW was unparalleled by any other band at the festival. By the third time I caught them, they had an entire crowd running like maniacs around a fire pit. Beat that.
