Stars – Backlines

We’ve already previewed two tracks from Stars‘ upcoming record, The North, in “Theory Of Relativity” and “Hold On When You Get Love And Let Go When You Give It“. The latest song off of the album, “Backlines”, sees the band striding into even poppier territory. For a deceptive five seconds it seems like thick, atmospheric electronica will carry the tune, but the soft electronic keys abruptly give way to steady drums and an up-tempo vocal from Amy Millan, whose sweet pipes are well-suited to Stars’ brand of pop. “Backlines” barely breaks two minutes, but still travels a lot of ground from a violin-powered build-up to a calm, quiet breakdown, back into a cymbal-crashing release.

The North drops September 4th on ATO Records.
