Local Natives – Breakers

L.A. four-piece Local Natives are back with new music after extensive touring in support of their excellent 2010 debut, Gorilla Manor. “Breakers”, off the band’s upcoming sophomore effort, Hummingbird, maintains the underlying blanket of heaviness that marked the group’s earlier work and adds light, jangly guitar riffs fit for the Dirty Projectors. The swaying starts-and-stops are almost trancelike as cold, overcast images play across the screen interspersed with video of the band playing on a darkened stage. As lead singer Taylor Rice’s soft croon slithers through the music, footage rolls of two strangely masked men pursuing him across empty beaches and through deserted woods. Flashes of someone flailing underwater mix with a space-suited traveler complete a rather Twin Peaks-esque video experience as the song slow-builds to a busy, chaotic finish.

Hummingbird will drop January 29, 2013 on Frenchkiss.
