Never before had I seen two Macbooks lined up back-to-back at a sold-out rock concert so I have to say I was not sure what to expect from New Zealand’s The Naked and the Famous, but I have to say was pleasantly surprised. The front duo of Thom Powers and Alisa Xayalith complimented each other incredibly well. Mix together equal parts synth, guitar, bass, drums and yes, computer, and you have a full-fledged digital delight. Their catchy pop melodies and lyrics carried the night as the crowd jumped around and sang to every word. With this much processing power, you know the lights were going to be excellent and they did not disappoint.
“Girls” and “Jilted Lovers were two standouts but nothing can beat the encore. Standing on the balcony — there was literally no space on the floor — I couldn’t help but be impressed by the gyrating mass of humans jumping to the beat on “Young Blood.” This is what live music is about.
