Kishi Bashi‘s video for “Bright Whites”, the first single off his debut album 151a, took a quirky, fast, imaginative song and made a video to outpace it in each regard. His latest single, “I Am The Antichrist To You”, is one of the most stark and haunting on the album. Not to be outdone, the video of the song is as saddening as it is adorable. It’s beautifully drawn in watercolor paper dolls telling a story of loneliness and abandonment. As K Ishibashi croons over light instrumentations, we watch as lost solitude gives way, if for but a moment, to warm and comforting happiness. Violins swell as friendship grows, but belie the tragedy that soon strikes. It’s hard to imagine that cartoon animals can be as evocative in three minutes as the pair in this video are, but then again, Kishi Bashi pulls of the same feat with his music. 151a is out now via Joyful Noise.
