Interview: Le Castle Vania

You gamers out there might remember the Nintendo game Castlevania where your mission was to slay vampires and other undead creatures. That was fun, wasn’t it? Well I’m not talking about that, but instead Atlanta native Dylan Eiland’s project, Le Castle Vania. What started off as a joke with some friends about creating a band after the video game stuck and now LCV is one of the most well-known electronic music producers in the game. Once upon a time Dylan might’ve been driving stakes through the hearts of the undead, but for the last twelve years he’s been destroying dance floors with his remixes and originals. I had the chance to talk to Dylan before he brings his energetic set to U Street Music Hall this Thursday for the tenth All Things Gold installment with Viceroy and Ghost Beach. Limited tickets available HERE. Full interview after the jump.

All Things Go Valentine’s Day Mixtape VII

The Valentine’s Day Mixtape is a tradition as old as ATG itself. The first edition was only the 10th post ever here at ATG HQ, and it has taken many shapes in the six years since. The only constant has been a seemingly endless supply of bubbly indie-pop and sugary sweet folk, mixed with a heavy dose of pure sexual energy. This year’s V-Day Mix has all the bases covered: let Bon Iver and Alexander do the crooning, Thao Nguyen & Coeur de Pirate can handle the innocent pop, and The Weeknd, Drake and Frank Ocean can handle the sex. Lots and lots and lots of sex.

As usual, the mix is available as individual tracks or in a .zip file below, along with the past six renditions.  I’ll be sharing mine with my beautiful ladyfriend Emma, but you can share it with your loved one, your dog, your boss’s daughter, or Ryan Gosling. Or you can share it with her, but that could get uncomfortable.

Also, Ginuwine.

The Weeknd – Echoes Of Silence

The Weeknd is back with mixtape #3, Echoes Of Silence. The group, fronted by Abel Tesfaye, said they’d be dropping something this Fall. Well, technically it’s still Fall for another couple hours. Coachella line-up should be coming out soon and I am putting my money on The Weeknd in a sunset slot in the Outdoor Theater. You can download the 9 track Echoes Of Silence in it’s entirety via The Weeknd’s website for free. A few choice tracks below including “The Fall” – produced by Clams Casino.

All Things Go Rainy Day Mixtape

It’s been a strange few weeks of weather here in Washington, with chilly breezes and seemingly endless showers signaling that Fall is officially upon us. It’s time to reluctantly toss those shorts and flip-flops in the closet in favor of sweaters and corduroys, and time to put the shimmery Summer anthems on the back burner in favor of some more subdued cold-weather melodies.

This Autumn has been marked by grey skies and constant rain. These conditions tend to throw me into an introspective mood, reflected in my music listening. Artists like The Album Leaf, Jose Gonzalez, Bon Iver, etc. get put on heavy rotation. With that in mind, I present the All Things Go Rainy Day Mixtape. The mix is a balance of old(ish) and new, with contributions from stalwarts such as Modest Mouse, The Flaming Lips, and Sufjan Stevens, in addition to tracks from newcomers No Ceremony and Coeur De Pirate. Also, what mixtape would be complete without a Frank Ocean appearance? Not a good one, that’s what.

As is tradition, you can grab the mixtape as a whole or download the individual tracks below.

All Things Go
Electrosummer Mixtape

Summer has been upon us for over a month now, and, if you’re a resident of D.C. like we are, it’s been a brutal one. Record setting temperatures have left me sticking to backs of chairs and taking an abnormal amount of showers. It hasn’t been all bad though, as the season brings about a change in my listening habits. Quiet introspective folk takes a back seat to shimmery Summer synths and just plain feel-good music.

Join us then, as we share our favorite electro-tinged anthems in part one of two Summer mixtapes. The All Things Go Electrosummer Mixtape contains gems from Summer stalwarts Delorean, Washed Out, and St. Lucia, and is bound to have something for everyone. Enjoy!

Artist Mixtape: Wild Beasts

Yesterday, we caught up with Wild Beasts for some words. Today, they express themselves through song, although not their own. Tom Fleming from Wild Beasts provided us with a few quick song picks and commentary. Be sure to check out Wild Beasts live this Saturday at the 9:30 Club, tickets available HERE.

MP3: The Blue Nile – “A Walk Across The Rooftops”
This record was only made to demonstrate the equipment it was made on. Unbelievable. Gorgeous, abstract, redolent of a time and a place gone by. Awesome.

MP3: Swans – “Beautiful Child”
Is Michael Gira the best lyricist alive? This is a truly terrifying and sarcastic recording, this is what I turn to when I need to blow the cobwebs away. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL IDEA.

MP3: Junior Boys – “Playtime”
A new one from long time band favorites. They’ve slowed down the tempos and upped the romance (and I didn’t think that was possible). There’s a WONDERFUL moment in the middle of this when it all falls away and crashes back in like the tide.

MP3: Lone Wolf – “We Could Use Your Blood”
From the same nest as us in Leeds, a gloriously subtle songwriter and beautiful vocalist and picker. He says John Carpenter, I hear Simon Finn.

Bixel Boys – Just A Taste

You know that feeling when you hit 6am after a long night of being out and all you want to do is roll over, look at whomever is next to you and…? This is the perfect mix for that moment and it’s brought to you by Bixel Boys.  This mix, appropriately named “Just A Taste,”  combines sexy, almost-smooth-jazz-eque rhythms with a dose of chlllwave and is the perfect length for a lovemaking sesh.  Bixel Boys, who still remain mysterious as they have yet to release original singles (or who they are for that matter), have been taking over the pool parties and disco parties here in Los Angeles, churning out the best in nu-disco and wavyness, so it’s nice to hear a change of pace as they slow it down.  Be on the lookout for more from Bixel Boys this summer.  Tracklisting after the jump.
