AlunaGeorge – You Know You Like It

AlunaGeorge‘s Body Music is one of the most hotly anticipated debut albums of 2013. The british duo, comprised of of Aluna Francis and George Reid, have teased us over the last year and a half with a host of simply irresistible songs. “You Know You Like It” was originally released back in 2012 but this week saw a re-release to get people excited for the full LP release on July 29th. Odds are you will in fact like this one very much. Reid’s beats have been compared to that of Timbaland’s with Aluna providing vocals not unlike — albeit a more subdued — Rihanna. Disclosure – Need You (100%) (Duke Dumont Cover)

Covers may be the realm of indie and pop music, but electronic artists are increasingly getting in on the action. Cut to Disclosure‘s cover of Duke Dumont‘s ubiquitous house anthem, “Need You (100%)”, covered during BBC Radio 1′s Live Lounge yesterday. The brothers Guy and Howard Lawrence brought along their “Latch” collaborator, vocalist Sam Smith, whose soulful range justly serves Dumont’s original. Disclosure’s drums and overall approach don’t add anything too groundbreaking, but that’s not a bad thing. Stream their take below.

INTRODUCING: Bennett Savage

309451_140335639456597_294561420_n

When Nashville native Bennett Savage Davidson isn’t throwing pizza parties for the Vietnamese elementary schoolers he teaches, he’s crafting eerily pretty and instantly catchy DIY tunes on his laptop. Bennett’s brand of vocal-driven subterranean folk pop features spectral, cavernous delay effects, primal synth and drum machine beats and jangly strings. The thick reverb on his tracks isn’t coming from a GarageBand plug-in; Bennett makes his presence felt amongst his neighbors by cutting vocals at the bottom of a 20-floor stairwell in his Ho Chi Minh City apartment building. His new track “Ugotitall” is pure and simple heartfelt pop, like a lost demo from a futuristic, time-traveling Brian Wilson, with one foot planted in 1950 and the other in 2050. It’s a breezy reflection on gratitude and the importance of buddies.

Bennett plans to record a full studio album in the fall upon his return to the states. In the meantime, explore his SoundCloud and you’ll find a plethora of innovative and pleasing melodic concoctions.

PREMIERE: Night Drive – Drones

This weekend we had the distinct pleasure of speaking with two secret agents who were sent from the past to recalibrate the future of electro pop music. Night Drive, as the time traveling duo is known, have just released their first track “Drones” (via Robot Dance Records). The track is energetic, rich in sound and engenders an ambience fitting for a sci-fi dystopian society. If Blade Runner and Drive had a baby, common sense would necessitate that Night Drive score the film.

Night Drive also has a forthcoming 5 track EP, and if “Drones” is any indication, the album will be a perfectly synthy summer soundtrack whether you are road tripping or hunting replicants.

Stream “Drones,” along with its own Bit Funk remix, below and see what Night Drive had to say about time travel, sci-fi and working with a real drone for their music video after the jump.

Kate Boy – The Way We Are

Kate Boy epitomizes everything we love about Swedish pop: big booming choruses, powerful synths, catchy lyrics and dance-inducing drums. “The Way We Are” is no exception. In the video for the band’s latest track, vocalist Kate Akhurst puts herself front and center, showing off her ability to strike a pose and vogue with her minimalist dance moves, all the while under the noir visual aesthetic they’ve stuck with thus far. If you haven’t yet sunk your teeth into Kate Boy, there’s no better time than now as they begin their North American invasion (beginning next Thursday in NYC at Santos Party House). Watch the video above.

David Lynch – I’m Waiting Here (Ft. Lykke Li)

DavidLynch

Famed surrealist film auteur David Lynch dabbled with music in the past, making his first significant move into the industry with his dark electronic debut, Crazy Clown Time. Lynch will follow up his 2011 foray with an experimental LP, The Big Dream, later this summer. Today we get our first taste of the album: “I’m Waiting Here.”

The track is a collaboration with Swedish indie pop sensation Lykke Li and is pretty much the antithesis of the oft-declared “summer jam.” The production is dark; the mood is chilling; and Lykke Li’s echoing, wispy vocals behind the eerie downtempo back beat are appropriately Lynchian. Listen to “I’m Waiting Here” in all its Twin Peaks-esque glory exclusively through Spotify below.

David Lynch’s The Big Dream will see release July 16th via Sacred Bones.

No time for an exotic vacation? That’s alright because Mikey Maramag AKA Blackbird Blackbird brings the tropics to your eardrums with his newest single “Summer’s Almost Here.” Pairing the electronic with the organic, Maramag says the track is “about dancing under moonlight with friends and loved ones, embracing the seasons, and transitioning into a period of irreversible change.” With its deeply-textured, dreamy folktronica style, you’ll be swaying in no time to the sounds of the new season. Stream it below.

Azure Blue – Willows and Pines

Azure-Blue

Azure Blue, an artist the FADER describes as “Sweden’s gentle new wave king,” recently released this gorgeous meditative synthpop track as the second single off his sophomore album, Beyond The Dreams There’s Infinite Doubt. Tobias Isaksson (Azure Blue) first caught our ears with his hauntingly pretty remix of “Get It All,” a beautiful cosmic R&B ballad from fellow swedes Karl X Johan. “Willows and Pines” is similarly delicate and melodic, drifting along on airy atmospheric synth pads, rumbling basslines and plaintive, far-off vocals. The track’s blissful conclusion features swirls of shimmering arpeggios that dart around metronomic drum cadences. It’s a song that evokes soft-lit brat pack love scenes and puffy-sleeved eighties slow dances.

Stay tuned for a full album from Azure Blue, due out sometime this fall.

Disclosure – When A Fire Starts To Burn

Disclosure have whet our appetites with several cuts from their upcoming debut album, Settle, over the past few weeks. Today, the brothers Lawrence have decided to give us a visual preview of the album with a video for “When A Fire Start To Burn.” Unlike the other songs they’ve released, this one didn’t quite grab me right off the bat, but after watching the video I’ve seen the light. Consider me a believer. Check it out for yourself above, but beware: the extreme dancing side effects put you at risk of spontaneous combustion.

You can stream Disclosure’s Settle now over at the Guardian.

Banks – Warm Water

Los Angeles-based singer Banks released “Warm Water,” a sexy, moody ballad with production from fast-rising UK producer Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, several weeks back. The track now gets its own video. Shot by Dylan Knight, the stark, black and white music video matches the sound perfectly. Fuzzy depth of field, handsy interactions between Banks and her male counterpart and softly undulating water further cement “Warm Water” as a polished piece of bedroom pop. Watch it above.
