One/One Thousand:

Exile On Main Street

Eric and Anouche met in New York in 2002 and moved to DC in 2008. She’s moving from a career in fashion and publishing to teaching, he’s an editor and writer in international development, and they have a two-year-old son. Both love music and are still discovering each others record collection nine years later. Their tastes are all over the place – The Cramps, classic soul compilations, The White Stripes, Aphex Twin all share space on the shelves. In One/One Thousand, Eric and Anouche randomly choose an album from their music collection each week and share their reactions. They may rediscover old forgotten loves, get into something new, or recoil in terror at what they used to listen to.

Albert Hammond – It Never Rains in Southern California

If you didn’t read Chuck Klostermann’s essay on the baseball statistic VORP as applied to rock ‘n’ roll, then you’re missing out — check it out here. One quote from the article reminded me of a great song I hadn’t played in a while: “Hammond’s father recorded at least one song (“It Never Rains in Southern California”) that’s probably better than any song the Strokes have ever made.”

The above is true. And never more painfully so than after a recent listen from The Strokes’ last painful attempt at an album. So in cheers to Albert’s father, Klostermann’s hilarity, and pretending like The Strokes just rode majestically into sunset after Is This It and never wrote another song, give “It Never Rains in Southern California” a try.
