The Futurebirds have been one of my favorites since they emerged from the Athens, GA scene a year or so ago. I’m a sucker for psychedelic alt-rock bands, and basically anything from below the Mason-Dixon line, except Florida. About this time last year, I published a review of their EP, in which I called their sound: “circling, haunting neo-psychedelic-folk that’s delivered with a healthy heap of Southern charm.” Not to toot my own horn, but well, honk honk, I think those words are pretty accurate. Since then, the band has put out their first album to high praise and rereleased a remastered version of their original EP. With each of these outputs, the six-piece has certainly generate buzz. A visit this past March and some stellar cyber-leaked covers of Steve Nix’s “Night Bird” and Chris Isacc’s “Wicked Game” certainly didn’t hurt. But they still remain under-appreciated and under the radar by my estimation (and I’m typically a cynic). So check these guys out. It’s perfect porch music just in time for summer lounging.
