Despite the often warranted derision surrounding the “chillwave” gold rush of 2k8-10, there are still plenty of artists making good downtempo electronic music. Look past the fuzzy glo-fi feeding frenzy and the delay effect-abusing dilettantes and you’ll find gems like Crozet.

John Helmuth started Crozet as a laptop music project during his senior year of college at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He was later joined by friend Sean Lee, who helped fill out the songs with guitar riffs and other tweaks. Crozet’s tracks, composed mostly on Casio keyboards and a Wurlitzer electric piano, are oozing with emotion and evocative sonic textures. Check out their breathtaking new song “Before Tomorrow, Nooka” below. If you like what you hear, dig deeper into the Crozet catalog with a soaring cover of John Waite’s eighties classic, “Missing You”.
