Sigur Ros – Leaning Towards Solace

Sigur Ros completes its Valtari Mystery Film Experiment video project with “Leaning Towards Solace,” an enthralling short film starring newcomer Elle Fanning and acclaimed actor John Hawkes. The film, directed by The Runaways‘ Floria Sigismondi, marks the sixteenth and final installment in the series, throughout which different artists and directors were given a modest budget to create visual accompaniments to Valtari songs. “Leaning Towards Solace,” which is soundtracked by album tracks “Dauðalogn” and “Varúð,” focuses on a young ballerina (Fanning) and her depressed father (Hawkes) living in a rural desert town. The ending is beautiful, if baffling, and will definitely get you thinking.

Sigur Ros’ Valtari is out now via Parlophone. You can view the entire Valtari Mystery Film experiment on the band’s website.

Wavves – Sail To The Sun

California thrashers Wavves are back with “Sail To The Sun,” a track and video from the band’s upcoming, yet-to-be-titled album. The video (directed by BLACK // DOCTOR) focuses on a hypocritical evangelist who preaches to the masses during the day while going on drug and hooker binges by night. In typical Wavves fashion the track is filled with lovely distortion and furious energy, which bodes well for the remainder of the band’s fourth LP. Expect the album to drop in the spring via Mom + Pop.

A$AP Rocky – F**kin’ Problems (Ft. 2 Chainz, Drake & Kendrick Lamar)

Think you have it bad? Try being a young, successful rapper these days. In his new video for “F**kin’ Problems,” A$AP Rocky and some of his most famous peers (2 Chainz, Drake and current hip-hop it-boy Kendrick Lamar) discuss the pains of being rich, famous and irresistible to women. The rap superstars keep the video simple, featuring themselves and a few females in front of a plain backdrop. These cocky dudes come across as more fun than obnoxious, and all four deliver pretty solid verses. So next time you’re worrying about paying your rent on time, just think about poor A$AP Rocky’s f**kin’ problems and count yourself lucky.

“F**kin’ Problems” is the second single from the upcoming LONGLIVEA$AP, due out January 15 via A$AP Worldwide/Polo Grounds Music/RCA.

Mac Demarco – Ode To Viceroy

Mac Demarco takes us back to the 90s with his new video for “Ode to Viceroy,” a semi-serious tribute to his favorite cigarettes. The VHS-style video is just as weird (read: awesome) as its accompanying song, following Demarco as he gambols around town, flashing his gap-toothed smile and, you guessed it, smoking a ton of cigarettes. Therein lies the key to Demarco’s lure: he is both delightfully dumb and strikingly ingenious. He is your idiot friend from high school who burns ants under a microscope while landing a shockingly high SAT score. “Ode to Viceroy” is at once tongue-in-cheek mundane and the most exciting thing you will watch all day.

Demarco’s 2 is out now via Captured Tracks.

WHY? – Paper Hearts

WHY? frontman Yoni Wolf is a man of many hats, and in the band’s new video for “Paper Hearts,” he shows them all to us. The video centers on Wolf singing the lyrics in front of dizzying green screen scenes in a variety of colorful getups. Some notable Wolf personalities include a trucker hat-sporting redneck, a knife-wielding maniac and the classic vocalist-trapped-in-a-washing machine. But where is the real Wolf? That is the question he leaves for the viewer, making the video seem like a musical “Where’s Waldo?”

WHY?’s Mumps, etc. is out now via Anticon.

Best Coast – Do You Love Me Like You Used To?

California-loving duo Best Coast just released a sickeningly adorable video for “Do You Love Me Like You Used To?,” the latest single from this summer’s LP, The Only Place. The video centers around the band’s September performance at the Santa Monica Pier. Interspersed between the live footage are vignettes of actual couples sharing their love stories via handwritten signs, significantly upping the video’s cuteness ante. But don’t worry; there are also clips of the band smoking weed and shot-gunning beers backstage with fans to balance it all out.

The Only Place is out now via Mexican Summer.

Gary Clark Jr. – Ain’t Messin’ ‘Round

Neo-soul guitar shredder and summer festival staple Gary Clark Jr. rocks another crowd in the video for the absurdly funky “Ain’t Messin’ ‘Round,” another track off his major label debut, Blak and Blu. The video features a quite dapper Clark Jr. in a hazy, crowded club doing what he does best: making the masses move with his incendiary riffs and smooth voice. Hopefully next time the Austin native has a party, he extends the invitation to us. Blak and Blu is out now via Warner Bros.

The Weeknd – Enemy

The Weeknd’s Abel Tesfaye does his menacing, sexy thing on “Enemy,” the new track that’s mysteriously absent from the upcoming Trilogy. The much-hyped Trilogy is a compilation of Tesfaye’s three previously released mixtapes (House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence) plus a few new tracks. The absence of “Enemy” is a bit unorthodox, but it doesn’t make the track any less alluring. Keeping with Tesfaye’s signature sampling prowess, the track features snippets of the Smiths’ 1984 B-side “Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want.” The not-so-subtle juxtaposition of Morrisey’s pleading for love with Tesfaye’s pleading for an easy one-night stand makes the track even more intriguing.

The Weeknd’s Trilogy drops November 13 via Republic.

Dirty Projectors – While You’re Here

Fresh off the heels of July’s acclaimed Swing Lo, Magellan, Dirty Projectors have leaked the track “While You’re Here” from its upcoming About To Die EP. Spanning just over two minutes, the short but sweet track is a string-laden, orchestral tribute to a fallen friend. Dirty Projectors’ frontman Dave Longstreth revealed on Twitter that he wrote the song for Gerard Smith, the late TV On The Radio bassist who died in April 2011 of lung cancer. The song is beautiful and complex, as we’ve come to expect from DP tracks, and it’s easy to see why the homage would have seemed out of place on the funky Swing Lo, Magellan. Any excuse for new Dirty Projectors music is alright in my book.

The About To Die EP, which will include three additional new songs, is set to drop November 6th via Domino Records.

Ghost Beach – Tear Us Apart

Autumn is finally settling in, sending with it a chill in the air and the promise of impending frigidity. Fear not, though, because NYC duo Ghost Beach just cut another steamy, tropical track that will melt the frost off your windows. “Tear Us Apart” sounds like an 80s version of Passion Pit on an island vacation. In other words, it’s the dreamiest, warmest, most danceable synth-pop you can imagine. If you’re in NYC this week, make sure to check out Ghost Beach, along with RAC, Alex Winston, Savoir Adore, Viceroy, Robert Delong, Blackbird Blackbird, and Queen of Hearts at the All Things Gold CMJ Showcase at Santos Party House tomorrow.
