Interview: Viceroy

If you’re looking for the perfect summer soundtrack, look no further than Austen Afridi, a.k.a Viceroy. Afridi originally hails from the East Coast, but you wouldn’t know it from his summer-fueled music. In late 2011, he released his Sunburn EP, four original tracks of cool and refreshing musical bliss. He’s also been staying busy with his “Jet Life” remix series, which features amazing artists like Breakbot, YELLE and St. Lucia. If you’ve got your mind right, you’ll be sure to add Viceroy to your list of ones to watch. He’s well on his way to becoming a household name.

Don’t miss Viceroy this Thursday alongside Le Castle Vania and Ghost beach at U Street Music Hall for All Things Gold 010. Limited tickets available HERE.

Interview: Le Castle Vania

You gamers out there might remember the Nintendo game Castlevania where your mission was to slay vampires and other undead creatures. That was fun, wasn’t it? Well I’m not talking about that, but instead Atlanta native Dylan Eiland’s project, Le Castle Vania. What started off as a joke with some friends about creating a band after the video game stuck and now LCV is one of the most well-known electronic music producers in the game. Once upon a time Dylan might’ve been driving stakes through the hearts of the undead, but for the last twelve years he’s been destroying dance floors with his remixes and originals. I had the chance to talk to Dylan before he brings his energetic set to U Street Music Hall this Thursday for the tenth All Things Gold installment with Viceroy and Ghost Beach. Limited tickets available HERE. Full interview after the jump.

Interview: Keep Shelly in Athens

Keep Shelly in Athens is the soundtrack to your dreams. The word “balearic” comes to mind, but it doesn’t do the Greek duo complete justice. Their music is ethereal, nostalgic downtempo pop that draws you into a beautiful and wistful haze with melodies that linger for days. In the past few months, Keep Shelly in Athens have gained a lot of momentum after releasing their EP, Campus Martius, in December of last year. They’ve enjoyed the top spot on Hype Machine with their collaboration on “<3″ with MMOTHS and have also put their dream-pop touch on a few remixes. I had the chance to chat with vocalist Sarah P about Shelly and what it was about Athens that made them want to keep her there, among other things. Make sure to check out Keep Shelly In Athens on Tuesday, April 24th at DC9.

Jai Paul – Jasmine

It’s only been ten days since Jai Paul‘s “Jasmine” made its debut on Soundcloud and already the track has over 400,000 plays. The UK singer/songwriter only has one other song to his name–2010′s breakout “BTSTU” –and since then we haven’t heard a lick from him, until now. Two years is a long time for radio silence, but “Jasmine” was worth the wait. Its sexy slinking synths, funky bass guitar line, and Jai Paul’s falsetto that rivals other great male R&B singers like Robin Thicke is like nothing else else out there right now. Jai Paul has gotten the blogosphere buzzing once again and now more than ever we’re ready for the main course. A full length album is apparently in the works and is expected to be  released on XL. Until then we’ll keep buzzing with anticipation.

KEATON – Get Down

You know what they say – all good things must come to an end. But only so new things can begin in turn. The adage stands true for Aaron Shanahan, who has stood back from his role as drummer for Miami Horror to pursue a new solo endeavor called KEATON. After starting things off with a mixtape, Mr. Mom, last week, Shanahan has just dropped his first single, “Get Down.” You can definitely feel that Miami Horror influence coming through the aptly-titled track’s disco funkiness.

Ghost Beach – Faded

Hot off the heels of playing several stellar shows in Austin, Texas at the SXSW Music Festival, Ghost Beach have released “Faded,” a perfect example of the NYC duo’s ability to create an expansive and layered sound with a dancefloor tempo, good old fashioned instrumentation and a chorus that comes in at just the right moment. Ghost Beach continue to take a little piece of every love affair I’ve ever had with a genre and put them all together. It’s retro synth-laden electro meets pure pop. A FREE download of the song is available on their website.

Charlotte Gainsbourg – Anna (Moonlight Matters Remix)

It’s been more than a year since we last heard from Charlotte Gainsbourg, when she released her highly acclaimed Beck-produced album, IRM, back in 2010. But Charlotte isn’t one to stay off the radar for very long. She’s always been in the public eye in one way or another since making her acting debut at the age of 13. Also the daughter of songwriter Serge Gainsbourg, Charlotte has just put out eight previously unreleased songs and live recordings and wrapped them into a double album called Stage Whisper. One of its singles, “Anna,” has gotten a nice remix treatment by Belgian disco producer Moonlight Matters. Moonlight Matters embraces Charlotte’s deep, breathy vocals and brings them down a bit further. The instrumentals, while completely different from the original, are bright and capture the melancholic vibe of the lyrics. Get ready to get lost in this one.

Neon Indian – Hex Girlfriend (Twin Shadow Remix)

For Record Story Day, Alan Palomo–dba Neon Indian–is giving us a special treat; a 10″ release of “Hex Girlfriend” from his latest album, Era Extraña, with a Twin Shadow remix of the song as the B-side. Lately I’ve been experimenting with lo-fi atmospheric electropop, so this Twin Shadow remix expertly fits the bill. The original track starts with distorted warbling synths and breaks into a garage glam rock influenced electronic track. Twin Shadow changes the intro and focuses on Alan’s vocals backed by the sound of an organ before the song breaks into a frenetic fit of percussion.

The record can be yours come April 21st but you better jump on it fast cause only 500 copies will be pressed.
