Ticket Giveaway: Painted Black Act II @ Irving Plaza

MATTE continues their Painted BLACK concert series at Irving Plaza with Act II this Thursday, February 20th. Act II promises to be even better with a standout line-up led by DIIV, Twin Shadow and Guards. Now you’re probably thinking, “Wow, it would be so cool if I could get free tickets to this show.” Well call us your personal Jesus today because we have a pair of tickets to give away to Thursday night’s festivities.

All you have to do is to RT our Twitter post (here) about the event and you’ll be entered to win. The winner will be announced on Thursday afternoon so keep it locked. If you’re not lucky enough to win, you can still purchase tickets here.

Premiere: From Kid – Sun (Ride The Universe Remix)

Variations Of Sun is the result of From Kid’s meeting On The Fruit label head honcho Freak You. The Swiss band’s single “Sun” became an instant obsession for Freak You, who provided the release’s first remix. Afterwards, Mr. Freak enlisted help from friends and fellow lovers of disco Ride the Universe. We’re premiering their take on “Sun” here today. Ride the Universe’s remix is bursting at the seams with the group’s signature funky, electro, 80s influenced sweetness that includes plenty of guitars, backing vocals and undeniable synth wizardry. Give it a listen below.

Youngblood Hawke – Say Say (The Soundmen Remix)

When listening to the Soundmen’s remix of Youngblood Hawke’s “Say Say”, don’t be surprised if pictures of roller skating down a sunny palm tree lined street in Venice, CA pop into your head. The sun is shining bright with Youngblood Hawke’s singer Sam Martin singing “staring at the universe, falling out of space headfirst” over the Seattle production duo’s bright beats. This remix is the perfect respite from the mid-Atlantic cold with its warm melodies and even brighter synths. Play this one out all day long below.

moodblanc – Vous

Nu-disco meets Duran Duran in Swedish duo moodblanc’s latest single “Vous.” The track captures everything great about the ’80s and brat pack movies in only four minutes with some sophisticated chilled out melodies that will have you dreaming about falling in love. Stream it below.

Free n Losh – A World Within

I was having a chat about Free N Losh’s new EP A World Within with a fellow ATG writer who dubbed it a “Disney space opera,” which I will both agree and disagree with. “A World Within” is six tracks that will take you on a magical odyssey through time and space. “Close Your Eyes” and “What You’ll See” sample audio from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and, yes, the snozberries do in fact taste like snozberries. The smooth jazz of “The World Within” sounds like a Chicago-meets-Cabaret musical mashup, while “Open Your Eyes” wraps things up nicely with a sample of the Temptations’ “Just My Imagination.” So you see, this EP’s got a little bit of everything. Stream it for yourself below.

PREMIERE: Au Palais – Thrones

Au Palais make beautiful noir-pop music with a moody, refined sound and Austra-esque vocals. Comprised of siblings David and Elise Commathe, the duo hails from Toronto and though they’ve been making music since 2011, Au Palais has only recently come onto my radar thanks to the fine folks at Cascine. Today we’re very happy to be premiering their latest single “Thrones,” a song with a heavy, addictive beat that makes for a perfect pairing with Elise’s enchanting vocals. If anyone would like to join my new millennium version of The Craft, please contact me; this song will be playing in the background during our seances.

Silver Swans – Sea of Love

San Francisco duo Silver Swans have returned with a brand new single, “Sea of Love,” off their upcoming album Touch. To be quite honest, it wasn’t my favorite when I first listened to it. After a couple of plays, though, the track has slowly creeped its way into my subconscious. “Sea of Love” is a dreamy track with animated, arpeggiating synths, but it’s really front-woman Ann Yu’s washed-out, echoing vocals that pull you in. Touch is out later this year, but for now you can check out “Sea Of Love” below.

SXSW Recap: Trails & Ways

SXSW is the week I look forward to all year and it always seems to pass by more quickly than I would like. STAY A WHILE I SAY. But hey, only 352 days until the next one right?

One of the highlights from this year was definitely our showcase with Indie Shuffle. And that’s objectively speaking. Seriously. We did it up big at Club de Ville, a venue that’s been a fixture of the Austin music scene since I can remember. The outdoor stage space encourages dancing and tanning – two things I can get down with. It was a cool 90 degrees on Saturday and the sun was beaming. The day kicked off with free Schlotzsky’s sandwiches (super tasty yumz) and Oakland pop quartet Trails & Ways. What initially caught my attention was Keith Brown’s (rhythm guitar, synths) multi-color blocked windbreaker and matching snap back. I don’t know if it’s a good or bad thing, but bands that have a good sense of fashion automatically get points from me and T&W definitely ticks that box. But let’s talk music. I love the fact that every member of Trails & Ways sings; the attention is never focused on just one person and you can appreciate their talent as a unit. Their dreamy, globally-influenced brand of “Brazilian Shoegaze” was absolutely the perfect thing to enjoy while sipping on a cold Lonestar and basking in the Texas sun. You should’ve been there.
