Blackbird Blackbird – Running Up That Hill (Kate Bush Cover)

Self-proclaimed folktronica artist Mikey Maramag, better know as Blackbird Blackbird, has deconstructed and reassembled Kate Bush’s 1985 classic, “Running Up That Hill,” for The Work Magazine. The rendition is hypnotic with layers of sound building up gradually on top of one another and relying on only a few repeated lyrics. Instead of getting hung up on the original blueprint, Mr. Maramag has thoughtfully taken inspiration from the subtle complexity of Kate Bush’s music. Stream it below.

Blackbird Blackbird’s Boracay Planet EP is out now on Lavish Habits.

Paul Banks – The Base

Interpol front man Paul Banks is dropping his Julian Plenti alter-ego for his second solo outing on Matador. The album, simply titled Banks, comes out today. If lead single “The Base” is any indicator, Banks will use his baritone and cryptic lyrics to further explore the subtle complexity staked out on Interpol’s 2010 self-titled release. However, that’s not to say there’s nothing new here; just wait for the massive bridge. Be sure to catch Mr. Banks when he comes to the Howard Theatre on November 9th.

Mayer Hawthorne – No Strings (RAC Remix)

RAC‘s André Allen Anjos has brought us his own funked up version Mayer Hawthorne’s “No Strings” from last year’s How Do You Do. Keeping the horns in the mix, Anjos adds synth and slick guitar that unlock the track’s dance potential without sacrificing Hawthorne’s Motor City soul. It wouldn’t be a stretch to say this would fit in nicely on something like FutureSex/LoveSounds. Come to think of it, we might have a contender here for the new king of blue-eyed R&B. It’s time to get it, Mayer.

Maserati – The Eliminator

Athens, Georgia post-rockers Maserati are returning this fall with Maserati VII, due out on October 2 via Temporary Residence Ltd. The album will be the band’s first with drummer Mike Albanese and features contributions from Zombi‘s Steve Moore. Their newest track “The Eliminator” kicks off with a blast of krautrock synth, echoing guitar, and propulsive drums, creating a sense of urgency that impressively manages to sustain itself for the entirety of the song. The result is a soundscape fit for a cinematic car chase.

How To Dress Well – Cold Nites

Brooklyn’s Tom Krell, better known as How To Dress Well, is back with more atmospheric R&B. Featuring his haunting falsetto, “Cold Nites” is the latest track to be released from the follow up to 2010′s Love Remains. The new album, Total Loss, is due out September 18 via Acephale.

JEFF The Brotherhood – Sixpack

The brothers Orrall go on a summertime adventure with their friends in the (kind of) NSFW video for “Sixpack,” the first single from the upcoming Hypnotic Nights. While making their way down a river the gang gets into everything from skinny dipping to, of course, sipping brew-dogs. To top things off, the bandmates party in the woods at night under green lasers and strobes because what dog day odyssey would be complete without a trippy light show? Hypnotic Nights drops July 17, but in the meantime you can stream it from NPR.

Preview: Japandroids @ Rock And Roll Hotel

Vancouver duo Japandroids are bringing their high-energy sound to DC, playing with fellow Canadian Cadence Weapon at Rock and Roll Hotel this Saturday, June 30th. With Celebration Rock — the spectacular follow-up to their 2009 debut Post-Nothing — getting praise from critics and fans alike, it’s no surprise that the show is sold-out. If you’re lucky enough to have a ticket then I’m sure you’re more than ready to scream along to the track below.

The New Pornographers – Think About Me (Fleetwood Mac Cover)

Hear Music/Concord has assembled a strong lineup of blue-chip artists for Just Tell Me That You Want Me: A Tribute to Fleetwood Mac. Contributors include Best Coast, MGMT and The Kills to name just a few. One of the first tracks to be released is The New Pornographers‘ rendition of “Think About Me” from Fleetwood Mac’s classic and arguably best album, 1979′s Tusk. With male/female harmonies and chiming guitars, the cover is faithful to original while throwing in just enough oddball synth to make Lindsey Buckingham proud. Just Tell Me That You Want Me hits shelves August 14.

A Place To Bury Strangers – And I’m Up

Noisy New Yorkers A Place To Bury Strangers have released a new track, “And I’m Up”, from their upcoming album Worship. With a cavernous yet prickly guitar sound, the song is reminiscent of Pyschocandy era Jesus And Mary Chain (think “You Trip Me Up” in particular). Hopefully we’ll get the chance to hear it live when APTBS come to Rock N Roll Hotel on July 26. Worship comes on June 26 via Dead Oceans.
